Lis·ter meth·od (lis'tĕr), antiseptic surgery, as first advocated by Lister in 1867. His operations were performed under a cloud of diluted carbolic acid spray, the instruments were dipped in a carbolic solution before use, and the wound was dressed with a thick layer of carbolized gauze. The present practice of aseptic surgery was developed from this.
