On western border of AZ, west of Phoenix; organized Jan 1, 1983 from Yuma County. Name Origin: For the once-prominent AZ city of La Paz, an important gold-mining center in the 1860s that eventually was abandoned. Gold had been discovered near the site on Jan 12, 1862, the date on which many Mexican and Mexican-American Catholics in early Arizona celebrated the Feast of our Lady of Peace (in Spanish, Nuestra Senora de la Paz)
