Nikolaev, Ivan Ivanovich

 

Born Mar. 30 (Apr. 11), 1893, in Vladimir; died Nov. 25, 1964, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in railroad transport. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953); became a member of the CPSU in 1942.

Nikolaev graduated from the Moscow Institute of Railroad Engineers in 1921 and taught there until 1957 (he became a professor in 1935). Beginning in 1931 he taught at the Moscow Electric Motor Engineering Institute of Railroad Transport. From 1947 to 1951 he also worked at the Academy of Railroad Transport and, after 1955, at the Institute for Problems of Integrated Transport Systems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main works deal with steam distribution in locomotives and with the dynamics and design of locomotives. Nikolaev was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and medals.
