(strat′ĕ-jē) [Gr. stratēgia, generalship] Any of various techniques used by organisms to increase the likelihood that they produce offspring. Common mating strategies used by animals include having brightly colored hair or feathers; making elaborate, ritualized movements to attract members of the opposite sex; defeating rivals in battle; guarding and protecting lifelong territories and mates; and entering the territories of others during mating season.
