Established: 1908.
Location:10 miles northwest of Fort Myers, Florida, in the Matlacha Pass estuary.
Activities:Boating, saltwater fishing.
Special Features:Refuge uplands and wetlands are maintained in their natural condition in order to provide undisturbed habitat for birds, fish, invertebrates, and other animals. The refuge is used as a nesting and roosting area by an assortment of colonial birds.
Habitats: 512 acres consisting primarily of tidal wetlands with low sand and shell ridges and 23 islands.
Access: All islands are closed to public access.
Wild life: Endangered and threatened species including West Indian manatee, wood stork, eastern indigo snake, American crocodile, bald eagle. Also provides habitat for sea turtles, osprey, shore birds, wading birds, raptors and neotropical migratory birds.
