Literary Fund

founded in 1859 in St. Petersburg (full name, Society for Assistance to Needy Literary and Academic Persons) at the initiative of A. V. Druzhinin. The organizers of the Literary Fund included N. A. Nekrasov, A. N. Ostrovskii, I. S. Turgenev, L. N. Tolstoy, and N. G. Chernyshevskii. It lasted until 1918.

In 1927 a literary fund was established by the Federation of Associations of Soviet Writers; its board of directors also included representatives of trade unions, the People’s Commissariat for Education, and the State Publishing House (Gosizdat). In 1934 the Literary Fund of the USSR was formed under the auspices of the Writers’ Union of the USSR. It gives writers financial and household assistance of all kinds. The work of the Literary Fund is directed by a board of directors appointed by the board of directors of the Writers’ Union of the USSR.
