Nikolai Alekseevich Zarudnyi

Born Sept. 13 (25), 1859, in Griakovo, in present-day Poltava Oblast; died Mar. 17, 1919, in Tashkent. Russian zoologist and ornithologist.

From 1879 to 1892, Zarudnyi made five expeditions to the Transcaspian region (now the Turkmen SSR), and from 1892 to 1906 he made four trips to Eastern, Central, and Western Persia, for which he was awarded medals and the Przheval’skii Prize by the Russian Geographical Society. After 1906 he worked in Tashkent studying Middle Asia. He collected and published extensive materials on the fauna of this region, especially the birds. A number of species of vertebrates, in-sects, and other animals are named after Zarudnyi.
