Nikolai Andreevich Urmaev

Urmaev, Nikolai Andreevich

Born Dec. 6 (18), 1895, in Gus’-Khrustal’nyi, in what is now Vladimir Oblast; died 1959 in Moscow. Soviet geodesist. Doctor of technical sciences, professor (1937); major general of the technical troops (1943).

After graduating from Moscow University in 1918, Urmaev held several command positions in sections of the Military Survey Service. From 1933 to 1952 he was head of the department of astronomy and advanced geodesy at the V. V. Kuibyshev Military Engineering Academy. His principal works dealt with advanced geodesy, photogrammetry, and mathematical cartography. Urmaev developed methods of triangulation adjustment based on determining systems of conventional adjustments along segments, and he developed one of the methods of adjusting the astronomical and geodetic graticule.

Urmaev was awarded the Order of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
