Abbevillian Culture

Abbevillian Culture

a European archaeological culture of the early (lower) Paleolithic era.

After it had been established in the 1920’s and 1930’s that finds of work tools at the town Abbeville (in the valley of the Somme River in France) were more typical of the early Paleolithic than the finds at the town of Chelle (near Paris), for which the epoch of the European early Paleolithic had been previously named, it became the custom to replace the traditional name “Chellean culture” by the term “Abbevillian culture” (in Soviet literature the traditional name—Chellean culture—is retained).
