Nikolai Antipov
Antipov, Nikolai Kirillovich
Born Dec. 3 (15), 1894, in Staraia Russa District, Novgorod Province; died Aug. 24, 1941. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the CPSU since 1912.
Antipov was the son of a peasant and worked as a mechanic in St. Petersburg plants. He was repeatedly arrested for revolutionary activity. In 1917 he was a member of the St. Petersburg Bolshevik Committee and deputy to the Petrograd Soviet, as well as delegate to the seventh (April) Party Conference from the Helsingfors Committee of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). In October 1917 he was a member of the presidium of the Petrograd Central Council of Factory and Plant Trade Union Committees. After the October Revolution he was a member of the Presidium, vice-chairman of the Supreme Council on the National Economy, and vice-chairman and chairman of the Petrograd Extraordinary Commission (Cheka). In 1919 he was secretary of the Kazan Province Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik), chairman of the province executive committee, and a member of the Revolutionary Military Soviet of the republic reserve army. From 1920 he was a member of the Presidium of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions. In 1923–24 he was secretary of the Moscow RCP (Bolshevik) Committee. In 1925 he was secretary of the Urals Province Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolshevik). In 1926–27 he was secretary of the Leningrad Province Party Committee and of the Central Committee’s Northwestern Bureau. In 1928–31 he was people’s commissar of post and telegraph of the USSR. From March 1931 on he was deputy people’s commissar of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspectorate of the USSR and a member of the presidium of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolshevik) Central Control Committee.
From 1935 on he was vice-chairman of the Council of Peoples’ Commissars of the USSR and Council of Labor and Defense of the USSR and chairman of the Soviet Control Commission of the Council of Peoples’ Commissars of the USSR. At the Thirteenth through Seventeenth Congresses of the Party he was elected a member of the Central Committee and was a member of the All-Union Central Executive Committee and of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
