Matteo Bartoli

Bartoli, Matteo

Born Nov. 22, 1873, in Albona; died Jan. 23, 1946, in Turin. Italian linguist. Professor at the University of Turin.

Bartoli was the founder of the neolinguistics school. Bartoli’s theoretical positions and his criticism of the neo-grammarian school were developed, with some revision, by his student, the Italian Marxist theoretician A. Gramsci. Bartoli introduced the concept of the isogloss into linguistics. Making use of the French dialectologist J. Gilliéron’s concept of areal linguistics, Bartoli distinguished various types of linguistic areas (Substratum, Superstratum, and Adstratum, 1939; Essays on Areal Linguistics, 1945).
