Oman Mountains
Oman Mountains
mountains in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, chiefly in Oman. They extend for more than 600 km along the coast of the Gulf of Oman. The highest peak is Jabal al-Sham (3,019 m) in the Jabal al-Akhdar. The mountains are composed chiefly of limestone, basalt, and serpentinite. At the foot of the mountains in the southwest and west and in the foothills are tropical deserts. The slopes are covered with savanna; in the southeast the higher slopes support tropical monsoon forests. Meadows are found in the upper mountain zone. Wheat, corn, bananas, and dates are raised in the oases.
