MadiaMadiaa genus of plants of the family Compositae. They are annual or, sometimes, biennial or perennial herbs with linear or lanceolate leaves. The flowers are yellow, with the anthodiums gathered into inflorescences; the flowers at the edge are ligulate (pistillate), and those in the center are tubular (bisexual). There are 18-20 species in western North America and in Chile. Melosa (M. sativa) is cultivated as an oil plant in North and South America, southern Western Europe, and some southern regions of the USSR. Its seeds contain a thick oil used in food and for industrial purposes. Madia
