Metric Treaty

an international convention signed in 1875 in Paris by 17 states, including Russia, to provide for international standardization of measurement and to improve the metric system of measurement.

By a decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR on July 21, 1925, the Metric Treaty was recognized as valid for the USSR. By 1972 the treaty had been signed by 41 states. On the basis of the treaty the International Bureau of Weights and Measures was established, the International Committee on Weights and Measures was organized, and general conferences on weights and measures are convened.
