metrifonate

 [met″rĭ-fo´nāt] an organophosphorous compound having potent anticholinesterase activity; used topically against ectoparasites and internally as an anthelmintic, especially effective against Schistosoma haematobium.

(trī-klōr'fon), An organophosphorus compound effective against immature and mature stages of Schistosoma haematobium, but ineffective against other species of Schistosoma in humans. Synonym(s): metrifonate

metrifonate

An organophosphate that is an irreversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. Metrifonate had some currency for treating Schistosoma haematobium schistosomiasis, but proved less effective than praziquantel and is thus no longer used for this indication. It was being developed for Alzheimer's dementia, but was withdrawn due to adverse effects (respiratory paralysis and defects in neuromuscular transmission).
