Lithuanian Castle

Lithuanian Castle

(Litovskii zamok), a seven-towered castle in St. Petersburg that was built in 1787. The Lithuanian Castle was initially used as a military barracks for the Lithuanian Regiment (hence its name). In 1823 and 1824 it was turned into a prison primarily for criminal offenders; its name was changed to the Municipal Prison. Political prisoners were also sent there. At the beginning of the 20th century, participants in the workers’s movement were incarcerated in the castle. During the February Revolution of 1917 the Lithuanian Castle was burned down by the rebelling masses.
