Topchibashev, Mustafa Agabek Ogly
Born Aug. 5 (17), 1895, in Yerevan. Soviet surgeon. Academician (1945) and vice-president (1951–56 and from 1959) of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR; academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960). Hero of Socialist Labor (1975). Member of the CPSU from 1947.
Topchibashev graduated from the medical department of the University of Kiev in 1919. From 1930 to 1975 he chaired the department of surgery of the N. Narimanov Azerbaijan Medical Institute. From 1945 to 1948 he also served as director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. His principal works deal with such subjects as abdominal surgery and regional pathology. Topchibashev was the originator of some new diagnostic and surgical methods. In 1950 he became an honorary member of the All-Union Society of Surgeons and a member of the International Society of Surgery. He has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria since 1951. In 1950, Topchibashev became chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee for the Defense of Peace. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1943, as well as four Orders of Lenin, five other orders, and various medals.
