Larroyo, Francisco

Born in 1908, in Zacatecas. Mexican philosopher.

Larroyo is dean of the philosophy faculty of the University of Mexico. He is one of the founders of Mexican neo-Kantianism and is the author of a number of works on pedagogy. His philosophical ideas are close to the ideas of the Baden school of neo-Kantianism. Larroyo sees philosophy as the retrospective analysis of categories of transcendental consciousness of man which manifest themselves in such spheres as science, art, religion, and politics. His sociological views follow the ideas of the Spanish philosopher J. Ortega y Gasset. He finds the sources of the crisis of the “modern age” in the rapid development of technology and in the imbalance between soaring scientific and technological thought and stagnating moral and political consciousness. An apologist for the American way of life, Larroyo looks upon it as the future form of historical existence in the West.
