Werner, Lars

Born July 25, 1935, in Stockholm. Member of the Swedish working-class movement.

The son of a worker, Werner graduated from the evening program at the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm, where he was trained as a construction technician, in 1972. He worked as a stonemason from 1950 to 1962 and then held elected positions in the trade union organization of Stockholm stonemasons; he served as chairman of the organization in 1972 and 1973. In 1953, Werner joined the Communist Party of Sweden (renamed the Left Party-Communists, or LPC, in 1967). He was elected a candidate member of the Administrative Committee of the CPS in 1964.

In 1967, Werner was named a member of the Administrative Committee of the LPC and a member of the Executive Committee of the Administrative Committee; he was also elected deputy chairman of the party. In March 1975 he was elected chairman. He headed the party organization of Greater Stockholm in 1971 and 1972. Werner was first elected to the Riksdag (Parliament) in 1965.
