Nikolai Dubovskoi

Dubovskoi, Nikolai Nikanorovich

Born Dec. 5 (17), 1859, in Novocherkassk; died Feb. 28, 1918, in Petro-grad. Russian landscape painter.

Dubovskoi studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1877 to 1881 with M. K. Klodt. He became a full member of the academy in 1900; from 1911 he was professor-director of the landscape workshop. In 1886 he became a member of the Society of Wandering Art Exhibitions—the peredvizhniki (a progressive art movement). In the 1890’s he was one of the leaders of this movement. He was an expert landscape painter and aspired to present an epic generalized picture of nature and all natural events (Calm Before the Storm, 1890, and On the Volga, 1892, both in the Tretiakov Gallery; Motherland, c. 1903-05, Omsk Museum of Fine Arts).
