Nikolai Evgenov

Evgenov, Nikolai Ivanovich

 

Born Aug. 15, 1888, in the village of Sobachï Gory, in Novgorod Province; died May 13, 1964, in Leningrad. Soviet hydrographer and oceanographer, arctic explorer, doctor of geographical sciences (1937).

Evgenov graduated from Naval Cadet School in 1909. He was a member of the hydrographic expedition of 1913-15 in the Arctic Ocean aboard the icebreaker Taimyr. Between 1920 and 1925 he conducted hydrographic research in the Olenek River estuary, in the delta and lower course of the Lena River, at Tiksi Bay, and along the western coasts of Novaia Zemlia: he headed the Karskoe expeditions for six years beginning in 1926. From 1933 to 1938 he was deputy chief of the Hydrographic Directorate of the Main Northern Sea Route Administration. From 1947 to 1951 he was professor at the subdepartment of oceanography of the Leningrad Hydrometeorological Institute, and from 1951 to 1961 he was a senior scientific worker at the Leningrad Department of the State Oceanography Institute. A cape on Bol’shevik Island and a bay in the Sedov Gulf on the eastern coast of Novaia Zemlia are named in honor of Evgenov.
