Nikolai Gvozdetskii

Gvozdetskii, Nikolai Andreevich

 

Born Dec. 2 (15), 1913, in St. Petersburg. Soviet physical geographer; doctor of geographical sciences (1949). Member of the CPSU since 1971. Professor (since 1951) and director of the sub-department of physical geography of the USSR in the geography department of Moscow State University (since 1959).

Gvozdetskii has done research on karst, the physical geographic zones of the USSR, the landscape and mapping of mountain regions (in particular the Caucasus and Middle Asia), and the history of Soviet geography. He received the D. N. Anuchin Prize of Moscow State University in 1969.
