Nikolai Iakkola

Iakkola, Nikolai Matveevich

Born Apr. 14, 1905, in Mellilia, Åbo Province, Finland; died Mar. 9, 1967, in Petrozavodsk. Soviet Karelian writer. Honored Cultural Worker of the Karelian ASSR (1965).

Iakkola initiated modern Karelian epic prose with his tetralogy Watershed (1949–66; Russian translation, 1972), which deals with the historical turning point that occurred in the life of the Karelian people when they embarked on the path of revolutionary struggle. He translated into Finnish such works as N. G. Chernyshevskii’s What Is to Be Done? and M. Gorky’s Foma Gordeev.

Iakkola was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
