Maulbertsch Franz Anton

(also F. A. Maul-pertsch). Baptized June 7, 1724, in Langenargen, Wiirttemberg; died Aug. 8, 1796, in Vienna. Austrian painter.

Maulbertsch studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts from 1741 to 1750. He became a professor at the academy in 1770. The artist worked in Austria, southern Germany, Bohemia, Slovakia, Hungary and Rumania. He was influenced by baroque Austrian (P. Troger) and Venetian painting (G. B. Piazzetta). Maul-bertsch’s frescoes are noted for their vigorous brushwork and resplendent palette. His later works are marked by a clarity of composition that reflects classicist influences (the frescoes in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna, 1752-53; in the Sümeg Church in Hungary 1758, in the Hofburg, Innsbruck, 1775-76; and in the episcopal residence in Szombathely, Hungary, 1783). Maulbertsch also did easel painting and etching.
