Mougeotia

Mougeotia

a genus of widely distributed green algae of the order Zygnematales of the subclass Conjugatae. It includes about 80 species, which live in freshwater and often form a “scum.” The microscopic, unbranched threads of Mougeotia consist of a row of elongated cells, each of which contains one or two lamellate chromatophores with two or more pyrenoids. The algae reproduce from pieces of the threads or, less frequently, by nonmotile spores. After conjugation, they reproduce by means of zygotes.
