Littrow, Joseph Johann Von

Born Mar. 13, 1781, in Bischof-Teinitz; died Nov. 30, 1840, in Vienna. Austrian astronomer. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1813).

Littrow graduated from the University of Prague in 1803. He was a professor of astronomy at the University of Kraków (from 1807) and the University of Kazan (1810–16). Systematic astronomical observations were begun in 1814 at the Kazan Observatory under his direction. In 1819, Littrow was appointed director of the Vienna Observatory. His chief works dealt with problems of practical and theoretical astronomy; he was known as a popularizer of astronomy.
