Magak’ian, Ivan Georgievich

 

Born Mar. 24 (Apr. 6), 1914, in Tbilisi. Soviet geologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1948).

Magak’ian graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Mines in 1935. He was head of a group of the Tadzhik-Pamir expedition organized by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1934-40), director of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1960-63), academician-secretary of the Division of Technical Sciences of the Armenian Academy of Sciences (from 1943), and later academician-secretary of the Division of Earth Sciences of the same body (1963). From 1948 until 1960 he was a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Mines and since 1960 has been a professor at the University of Yerevan. His principal works are devoted to the geology and geochemistry of ore deposits and to metallogeny. In 1950 he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR. Magak’ian has also received three orders.
