Mitrokhin, Dmitrii Isidorovich

Born May 15 (27), 1883, in Eisk, in presentday Krasnodar Krai; died Nov. 7, 1973, in Moscow. Soviet graphic artist. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1969).

From 1902 to 1904, Mitrokhin studied in Moscow at the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture and the Stroganov Industrial Arts School. In 1905 and 1906 he attended private art schools in Paris. In 1916 he joined the World of Art association.

Beginning in 1910, Mitrokhin did a great deal of work in book design. His drawings evolved from simple ornamental vignettes to more fully developed works based on sketches from nature. He designed book covers for the I. Knebel’ Publishing House (1910–18), the M. Sabashnikov and S. Sabashnikov Publishing House (1910–18), and the People’s Commissariat of Education (1918–19). He designed editions of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Goldbug” (published 1922) and Heliodorus’ Aethiopica (published 1932). Mitrokhin was a master of wood engraving (1923–34), lithography (1925–34), line engraving and drypoint (from 1927), drawing, and watercolor (landscapes and still lifes). From 1924 to 1931 he was a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Art and Technology.
