Mutanchiang

(Mutankiang), a city in northeastern China, in Heilungkiang (Heilungchiang) Province. Population, approximately 300,000 (1970). Mutanchiang is a landing on the Mutan-chiang River and a railroad junction. It is one of China’s major logging and woodworking centers. Other industries are food processing, chemicals, paper, textiles, and machine building.

(Mutankiang), a river in northeastern China, a right tributary of the Sungari River (Amur basin). It is 700 km (according to some data, 550 km) long and drains an area of approximately 40,000 sq km. The Mutanchiang rises in the Mutanling Mountains and flows chiefly through the Man-churian-Korean Mountains. High water occurs during the spring and summer, and low water during the winter. The mean flow rate in the middle course (at the city of Mutanchiang) is 181 cu m per sec. The river freezes in November and thaws in April. In the upper course of the Mutanchiang are the Chingpohu Reservoir and a hydroelectric power plant. The river is navigable for junks and is used for floating timber. The cities of Tunhua, Ningan, Mutanchiang, and Ilan are located on the river.
