Nikolai Komarov

Komarov, Nikolai Pavlovich

(pseudonym of Fedor Evgen’evich Sobinov). Born 1886; died Nov. 27, 1937. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the Communist Party from 1909. Son of poor peasants in the village of Borykovo, presentday Kalinin Oblast.

Komarov became a worker in St. Petersburg in 1902. He took part in the Revolution of 1905–07. He became a member of the Vyborg regional committee of the RSDLP in 1911. In 1912 he organized a political protest demonstration against the Lena shootings. In 1915 and 1916 he was a member of the St. Petersburg committee of the party. On a number of occasions he was a victim of repression. After the February Revolution of 1917 he was a member of the St. Petersburg and Vyborg committees of the RSDLP (Bolshevik), a member of the Petrograd soviet, and chairman of the plant committee at the Novyi Lessner Plant. He was a delegate to the sixth congress of the RSDLP (B) and took part in preparing for and carrying out the October Revolution of 1917.

In 1918 he became a commissar in the Red Army on the Eastern Front and subsequently, chief of the special department and chairman of the Petrograd provincial extraordinary commission. In 1921 he was secretary of the Petrograd provincial executive committee. In 1925 he was secretary of the northwestern bureau of the Central Committee of the RCP (Bolshevik). From 1926 to 1929 he was chairman of the Leningrad soviet and the Leningrad provincial executive committee. In 1930 he was a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council on the National Economy of the USSR; from 1931 he was people’s commissar of municipal services of the RSFSR. He was a delegate to the Eleventh through Fifteenth and Seventeenth Party Congresses, was elected a member of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik) at the Tenth and Twelfth through Fifteenth Party Congresses, and was a candidate member of the same at the Eleventh and Seventeenth Party Congresses. He was a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Central Executive Committee of the USSR and a member of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
