Mountaineering Camp

an educational or athletic facility for training mountain climbers and improving their athletic skills. The first mountaineering camps in the USSR were set up in 1931; in 1968 there were 18 mountaineering camps with a capacity of 11,000–12,000 persons a season (June-September). Today’s mountaineering camps are well-appointed facilities with dormitories and tents, methodological and medical centers, and all necessary equipment. Mountaineering camps (stationary and mobile, seasonal and year-round) belong to voluntary athletic societies of the trade unions and are located in the most popular high-altitude regions of the Caucasus, Tien Shan, and Pamir mountains.
