open architecture[′ō·pən ′ar·kə‚tek·chər] (computer science) A computer architecture whose specifications are made widely available to allow third parties to develop add-on peripherals for it. open architectureA system in which the specifications are made public in order to encourage third-party vendors to develop add-on products. Much of Apple's early success was due to the Apple II's open architecture, which is also called an "open system." The PC is the prime example of an open architecture.
