On the southwestern border of TX, southeast of Del Rio; organized Feb 2, 1856 from Kenedy County. Name Origin: For Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-70), Republic of TX patriot, rancher, and legislator. Many of his cattle went unbranded and were stolen, thus the word 'maverick' to describe a stray animal or a person with no attachment to a place or group
