Mix Border
Mix Border
a planting of many rows (sometimes a bed) of ornamental flowering plants arranged so that flowering continues from early spring to late autumn. A mix border consists of a background (wall, fence, or hedge), groups of tall plants against the background (delphinium, perennial asters, mallow), a middle section with groups of plants of medium height (in the spring, narcissus or tulips; in early summer, peonies, irises, or lupines; in summer, phlox; in autumn, asters), and low perennials and annuals in the foreground (primrose, forget-me-not, grape hyacinth, creeping phlox). Complementary elements of mix borders are highly decorative plants (Japanese quince, tree forms of hydrangea, roses, arborvitae, and climbing plants) or small architectural forms (vases, sculptures, small fountains).
