(Arthur Peter Mutharika) (mo͞otä`rēkä), 1940–, Malawian lawyer and political leader, LL.B. London Univ., 1965, J.S.D. Yale, 1969; brother of Bingu wa MutharikaMutharika, Bingu wa, 1934–2012, Malawian economist and political leader, b. Nyasaland (now Malawi) as Brightson Webster Ryson Thom; he africanized his name during the 1960s. Mutharika served in the governments of Nyasaland (1963–64) and Zambia (1965––66).

Like his brother a member of the Democratic Progressive party (DPP), he served (2009–14) in Malawi's parliament and held several cabinet posts during his brother's second term as president, including foreign affairs minister (2011–12). 1950–, Malawian political leader, b. Nyasaland (now Malawi). First elected to parliament in 1999 as a member of the United Democratic Front, she was named minister for gender and community services under President Bakili Muluzi.
