Las Villas
a province in central Cuba. Area, 18,300 sq km; population, 1,362,000 (1970; 54 percent urban). Administrative center, the city of Santa Clara.
Las Villas produced 2.1 million tons of sugar in 1970—nearly one-fourth the national output. The province has citrus, coffee, and cocoa plantations. Rice is grown in the Sancti Spiritus District. Las Villas has a metal-working industry (Santa Clara, Caibarien) and a plant producing artificial fertilizer (Cenfuegos). The most important port of the province (bulk sugar) is at Cien-fuegos.
