Mezha

a river in Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR, lower reaches in Smolensk Oblast. Left tributary of the Zapadnaia Dvina. Length, 259 km; basin area, 9,080 sq km. The Mezha rises in the Valdai Hills, flowing along flat marshy terrain. The Mezha is fed by various means. The average discharge of water is 61 cu m per sec. It freezes in November and thaws in late March or April. It is used for floating timber and is navigable in the lower reaches. The city of Nelidovo is on the Mezha.

a river in Kostroma Oblast, RSFSR. Left tributary of the Unzha River (Volga basin). Length, 186 km; basin area, 2,630 sq km. The Mezha forms at the confluence of the Koniug and Michug rivers, which rise in the Severnye Uvaly, and flows through a wooded hilly area. The Mezha is fed by various means, predominantly by snow. The average discharge of water 39 km from the mouth is 17.9 cu m per sec. It freezes in November, thawing in the second half of April. It is used for floating timber.
