Magnetic ink is made in the form of a carbonyl iron suspension in heptane or mastic with microscopic magnetic particles. Dyes are often added to facilitate the visual inspection of a recording (visible magnetic ink). Magnetic ink is used chiefly for mechanizing document processing (sorting, identifying, accounting, coding).
