Ovanes Erznkatsi

 

Born circa 1230; died 1293. Armenian scholar, poet, and philosopher.

Ovanes Erznkatsi was raised and educated in the city of Erznka. He wrote numerous works in prose and verse, characterized by humanism and patriotism. Themes of love and delight in nature permeate his lyric quatrains. His language is both elegant and simple, abounding in popular proverbs and sayings. Ovanes Erznkatsi is the author of a number of philosophical and cosmographical works, as well as a number of works on grammar.
