Mutually Owned Stock Exchange

Mutually Owned Stock Exchange

A stock exchange owned jointly by members, which are usually the companies whose stocks are traded on the exchange. That is, when a company is listed on a mutually owned stock exchange, it becomes a joint owner of that exchange. These exchanges are nonprofit organizations. Some exchanges, such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, formerly were mutually owned but became for-profit, publicly-traded companies. See also: Demutualization.
