Barabashov, Nikolai Pavlovich

 

Born Mar. 18 (30), 1894, in Kharkov. Soviet astronomer. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1948). Hero of Socialist Labor (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Barabashov has been director of the Kharkov Observatory since 1930 and professor of the University of Kharkov since 1933. He did much research on the optical properties of the moon and the atmospheres and surfaces of the planets. In 1918 he determined that the surface of the moon has a porous structure. He was a deputy to the fourth and fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded four Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
