[mag¦nēd·ō¦äp·tə·kəl ′shəd·ər] (optics) A device in which light passes through crossed Nicol prisms and a glass cell containing a liquid displaying the Faraday effect between the prisms; light can pass through the system only when a magnetic field is applied to the cell at an angle of 45° to the polarization planes of both prisms.
