Nikolai Petrovich Sazhin

Sazhin, Nikolai Petrovich

Born Mar. 2 (14), 1897, in Ekaterinburg, now Sverdlovsk; died Feb. 23, 1969, in Moscow. Soviet metallurgist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964; corresponding member, 1953). Hero of Socialist Labor (1967).

In 1931, Sazhin graduated from the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering. In 1933 he began working at the Institute of the Rare-Metals Industry, where he became scientific director in 1941. In 1949 he became a professor at the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Engineering. From 1964 to 1969, Sazhin served as chairman of the section on semiconductor chemistry and technology of the council on the physics and chemistry of semiconductors of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Sazhin’s principal works dealt with the technology of rare metals, pure substances, and semiconductor materials. Sazhin was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1946 and 1952) and the Lenin Prize (1961); he was also awarded two Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
