Nikolai Pogrebov

Pogrebov, Nikolai Fedorovich

 

Born Nov. 5 (17), 1860, in St. Petersburg; died Jan. 10, 1942, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist and hydrogeologist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1940).

Pogrebov enrolled in the Institute of Mines in St. Petersburg in 1884 but was expelled in 1887 for participating in the revolutionary movement. In 1891 he began working with the Geological Committee, which later became the All-Union Geological Research Institute. In 1930 he became a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Mines. Pogrebov’s major works concern regional hydrogeology, engineering geology and water supply in various cities, and the combustible shales of Estonia and Leningrad Oblast.
