Livingstone Mountains

mountains in East Africa, in Tanzania. The Livingstone Mountains extend for 160 km as several parallel ranges between the Poroto Mountains in the north and the tectonic Ruhuhu valley in the south, framing the graben of Lake Nyasa along the northeast shore of the lake. Maximum elevation is 2,961 m (Mount Mtorvi). The mountains are composed of granite and gneiss. The slopes, which receive as much as 2,000 mm of precipitation per year from summer monsoons, are covered with savannas and forests, which are leafless during the dry season; on the peaks are mountain steppes. The mountains are named for D. Livingstone.
