Livny Hog

a breed of hogs raised for meat and lard, produced in the Livny Raion, Orel Oblast, RSFSR, by crossing domestic improved pigs with early-maturing lard breeds and early-maturing meat and lard breeds (Medium White, Berkshire, Large White, and others). The breed was confirmed in 1949. The Livny hog is large and strong. The body is long and broad, with well-developed hams. The hog is white or mottled black. The liveweight of the boars is 300–350 kg, and of the sows 200–250 kg. There are ten or 11 shoats in a litter. Milk production is 60–80 kg. This breed of hog is used in all types of fattening programs. Shoats being fattened for meat reach a liveweight of 100 kg by six or seven months of age (with average daily weight gains of 700–750 g and outlays of 3.8–4.0 feed units for each kg of weight gained). Livny hogs are raised in the Orel, Briansk, Lipetsk, and Voronezh oblasts. They are often crossed with the Large White hogs. The best breeding farms are the Toida farm in the Voronezh Oblast and the Livny farm in the Orel Oblast.
