Magnitskii, Vladimir Aleksandrovich
Born May 30 (June 12), 1915, in Penza. Soviet geophysicist and specialist in the physics of the earth. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1962.
Magnitskii graduated from the Moscow Institute of Engineers for Geodesy, Aerial Photography, and Cartography in 1940. He taught there from 1940 to 1954 and subsequently at Moscow State University, where he is now the head of the geophysics division. Magnitskii’s works deal with the study of the structure and processes in the earth’s interior, for which he draws on data taken jointly from geophysics, geology, geochemistry, petrology, crystallography, geodesy, and other sciences.
