Ljubljana, University of
one of the oldest and largest higher educational institutions in Yugoslavia. It was founded as a Jesuit college in Ljubljana in 1595-96 and was reorganized in 1809-10 and 1919. In 1919 it acquired the status of a modern university.
During the 1972-73 academic year the University of Ljubljana had departments of law, philosophy, economics, natural sciences and technology, architecture, civil construction and geodesy, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, medicine, biological technology, sociology, political science, and journalism. There were 11,600 students and about 300 professors at the university. In 1972 the national library of Slovenia and the University of Ljubljana (founded in 1774) had more than 800,000 volumes.
