ABCC5

ABCC5

A gene on chromosome 3q27 that encodes a protein of the MRP subfamily of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which transport various molecules across extra- and intracellular membranes, many of which are involved in multidrug resistance. ABCC5 exports its substrate, cyclic nucleotides, contributing to the degradation of phosphodiesterases, and may be an elimination pathway for cyclic nucleotides. ABCC5 is linked to resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs, 6-mercatopurine and thioguanine, in patients with acute lymphocytic leukaemia, and resistance to antiretroviral nucleoside analogues (e.g., 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine) in HIV-infected patients.
