Nikolai Stepanovich Smetanin

Smetanin, Nikolai Stepanovich

 

Born Mar. 25, 1905, in St. Petersburg. Originator of the Stakhanovite movement in the leather-footwear industry. Member of the CPSU since 1939.

During the period 1918–39, Smetanin worked as a stretcher at the Leningrad Skorokhod Shoe Factory. On Sept. 21, 1935, he exceeded his production rate by 200 percent. He achieved success as a worker by separating technical operations. In 1939, Smetanin became an executive in the Ministry of Light Industry and directed a number of leather-footwear enterprises. He retired in 1962.

Smetanin was a deputy to the first convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
